00300 Dear Mr. Sandelin,
00400
00500 Over the past few years I have been allocated funds of about
00600
00700 $3000 per year for musical research involving the IBM 360/67 computer.
00800
00900 Because of the interactive and real-time nature of most of my research
01000
01100 involving computers it became apparent very early that the facilities
01200
01300 of the PDP10 at the Artificial Intelligence Project were much better
01400
01500 adapted to this work.
01600
01700 Great progress has been made by members of the music department
01800
01900 working as "guests" of the Artificial Intelligence Project. However when
02000
02100 budgets get tight or unforeseen mechanical failures lead to mass frustration,
02200
02300 mutterings begin on the subject of doing away with all "guests." This usually
02400
02500 means music as, to my knowledge, this is the only long-term, non-funded work
02600
02700 being done at the Project. Due to the curious position this research has held
02800
02900 - drawing heavily upon both art and science - great difficulty has been
03000
03100 experienced in getting financial support.
03200
03300 In order to legalize the hitherto loose relation of musical research with the
03400
03500 Artificial Intelligence Project I would like the current and future funds
03600
03700 for research computation allocated to the PDP10 instead of the 360/67.
03800
03900 In terms of the actual value received from the A.I.P. this amount of money
04000
04100 will represent only a token payment, however I feel this should be done as a
04200
04300 first step toward obtaining realistic funding.
04400
04500 I have enclosed a brief document which describes some of the music work
04600
04700 being done at the A.I.P. and also a copy of a recently submitted proposal which
04800
04900 aims toward the eventual establishment of an independent music department
05000
05100 computer.
05200
05300
05400 Very sincerely,
05500
05600
